Sleeping Pills

Insomnia or lack of sleep is one of the most common problems faced by both men and women in today’s stressful times. Sleep is the body’s natural system of stress-relief and overcoming exhaustion. When the body is sleep-deprived then our performance in doing day to day activities also reduces. So, for people with sleeping problems an easy way out is to buy sleeping pills.

Sleeping pills are generally discouraged for prolonged use as they are highly addictive. Like any other addictive drug, the ‘feel-good’ factor is relatively high when you take them but they may not be really effective. When sleeping pills are used for a very long time they can harm you as much as cigarette smoking.

Side-effects are a reality while taking sleeping pills. They generally impair one’s memory, intelligence and judgment. Pharmaceutical companies are trying their best to come up with sleeping pills with minimum side-effects, so that our day time performance is not affected.

Sleeping pill overdose can kill a person if not attended to in time. Statistically speaking one of the most common ways used by women to commit suicide is to take an overdose of sleeping pills. However, most pharmaceutical companies today are bringing forth milder and potentially non-fatal sleeping pills.

A person who had an overdose of sleeping pills may experience dizziness, cardiac arrest, vomiting, fainting, coma or other such life threatening signs.

So, it is absolutely advisable to take only the prescribed or recommended dosage of sleeping pills.

Valerian is a popular natural or herbal sleeping pill available in the market today. It is a herbal remedy and is non-addictive.

The natural or herbal sleeping pills are a better alternative to the regular sleeping pills.

Sleep aids like aromatherapy oils or essential oils can also be used to induce sleep. Chamomile and Lavender are very effective sleep-inducers. When you inhale the perfume of these oils they stimulate hormones like serotonin which help in relaxing.

Drinking a glass of warm milk before going to bed may sound like an old grandmother’s advice, but not anymore. It is a proven fact now, that milk contains amino acid which causes one to relax and acts as a sleep-enhancer.

Insomnia can be caused because of many reasons- poor health, a new job, a failed relationship, worry- any of these can cause a lack of sleep. A person who has difficulties in sleeping for a month or more is a chronic insomniac. Women with iron deficiencies may also experience lack of sleep.

Before you pop that sleeping pill try a healthy balanced diet and vitamin supplements and create a relaxed atmosphere in your bedroom. Soft music, soft lights and pleasant atmosphere all contribute to a good night’s sleep.
